This webulary helps to explain some common words used within Instructional Design.


Digital Divide
Digital Divide refers to the gap between the people that have access to digital media, computers, information technology and the people who do not have access to this to help them become digital citizens.

Distance Education
Distance education delivers instruction to students that not 'on site.' This can be web-based training, video-check out courses, or correspondence courses.

ISL - Integrated Learning Systems
ISL's are packages of networked hardware and software used in education. These include programmed instruction for teachers and students. They can be used to direct or coach students through the learning experience. ILS's are not drill-and-practice but students work individually at their own pace through a number of exercises that provide them with targeted skills.

LMS - Learning Management System
LMS is sometimes also called CMS (Course Management System). These are software solutions that allow for course development and virtual learning environments. Examples are Moodle, Blackboard, and WebCt.

RLO - Reusable Learning Object

Scaffolding
Scaffolding is a temporary framework in place to hold up something. Within education it often refers to a person modeling the expected behavior and guiding through the process of understanding expectations. As learning occurs, the framework is gradually removed.

Simulation
Simulation is the imitation of some real thing, state, or process. Usually simulation entails the representation of characteristics of behavior or certain physical or abstract system.
